Arches Project
At Wisewood we are part of a School Sports Partnership called the ARCHES. This year our pupils we have had the opportunity to take part in many different sporting events and competitions through the partnership, as well as receive expert coaching from sports professionals. Earlier in the year our younger pupils were offered coaching in a fundamentals programme through an initiative called ‘Active Archie’ where coaches worked with pupils on basic level activities such as balance, ball skills and coordination. Last term our year 4 pupils took part in a tournament at Hillsborough Leisure centre in Lacrosse, which was a fantastic opportunity for them to try an unusual sport.

Also at Hillsborough, in the Spring term, our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils took part in an athletics festival against other schools in our family from the partnership.

At the beginning of the summer term, Year 5 and 6 pupils received coaching from the Sheffield Eagles in tag rugby which has made a huge impact on their ability to play this sport. This training culminates in a tag rugby festival held at Don Valley stadium. Our Y6 pupils also took part in a cricket festival held at Oughtibridge cricket club this summer term. The Arches games in May at the English Institute of Sport provided our pupils with a fantastic opportunity to compete in many different sports including football, rugby, cricket, duathlon, dance, athletics, and basketball. Out of 32 Primary School our pupils at Wisewood came an impressive 2nd place in the track events and gained a silver certificate.

The Arches partnership has also helped us to develop our PE curriculum this year and we have introduced two new schemes of work into school in Games and Outdoor Adventure Activities. Our staff have received training in both the schemes which will be of enormous benefit to our pupils.
